Interviewer: Sixxswine

I love hearing new talent, one such band is Sound And Fury who offer up an old school rock and punk attitude and sound. Recently I got an opportunity to talk with their front man Luke Metcalf as the band it readying the release of their self titled album. Please check out the review on the album in our review section and check out the album.

Ruben Mosqueda

You guys are relatively young aren’t you? What the average age of the band members?

Well, we’re all in our mid-20’s, I think the average age of the band is about 26. We’re not that young anymore I guess….

How long has the band been together at this point?

We got together almost two years ago. This is our debut album.

How did you guy get such an old school sound? You must have had older siblings and parents with one hell of a record collection.

All of the guys in the band are obsessed with music, especially rock music, but we’re also into different stuff. One thing we all share is a love for 1970’s rock and punk, you know. My objective right from the beginning…my favorite bands are AC/DC, The Ramones, The Pistols, The Misfits and Sabbath and stuff like that. So right the beginning I wanted to be in a band that would combine 70’s rock with the attitude of punk rock. I wanted to create a hybrid band that would create music that merged the two together.

Your album is fun from beginning to end. How long have the songs that we hear on the album been around? Or is this fresh material?

Thanks. The songs…some of them we’ve worked on them for quite a while you know. Most of them didn’t come together over night, right. We have been working on some for a couple of years, getting them just how they were envisioned. We really took our time getting this together, especially since we didn’t have a big name producer. It was me and one of my buddies who produced it, we learned so much from our mistakes. We recorded the album in our rehearsal space, so it wasn’t like we were in a big budget studio where if we made a mistake we’d go broke, you know. We really took our time, man.

When I hear the album I certainly heard AC/DC, The Ramones and I can definitely hear The Misfits on there…

Oh man, I love The Misfits, two of my favorite albums are Static Age and Walk Among Us. That’s cool that you were able to hear that in there.

Well I can denifately hear some Glenn Danzig like vocal lines in there. How would you describe the band to someone that hasn’t heard Sound And Fury?

In my opinion it’s pure, no nonsense, hard, kick ass, rock ‘n roll…stripped down no bullshit. It’s music to party your ass off to.

What is your favorite track on the album and why?

Ahh…you know that hard man. Yeah, you know it’s kinda cliché, I have always heard or read in interview where musicians refer to their songs to like one of the kids. It really is like trying to choose which your favorite child is!!! But if I had to choose, I’d have to say that I really psyched about “Bad Touch,” but “Runaway Love” is a powerhouse tune, “Hellhound” and “Night Of The Ghouls” are some good rock songs. I think we have some good variety on the album, right. For me the whole mission was getting back to when bands would create albums, they didn’t just write singles. One of the incredibly stupid things or in a long line of stupid things that the record industry has done was switching the focus on singles. They just don’t support a band’s growth anymore, they’d give a band three to four album to develop them, that’s just not so anymore. Now they don’t seem to care about the albums, they only seem to care about it having a hit single in there. It’s like if you don’t have a hit single in the first fifteen minutes of your band getting launched they’ll dump you. That’s just so unbelievably stupid. This is one of the reasons why people are downloading so much music for free, it’s not  because they can do it , but because if there’s only one good song on the album why would you want to get ripped off by buy the whole album?  You get back to doing it yourself and really taking the time to make an album, so that every single moment of it is strong and a complete piece of work. I think if more bands were doing this today people would be more interested in getting albums you know. At least if they rip me off they’ll want to download the entire album you know.

As we have heard you’re into punk and classic rock which is clearly heard in Sound And Fury. Who are your absolute favorites?

My absolute favorite band is AC/DC I’ve got an AC/DC tattoo on my arm. Bon Scot in my opinion was the undisputed king of rock ‘n roll. I also love the Brian Johnson era, but to me Bon is king.

You guys are based in Toronto right? What’s the music scene like in Toronto?

Toronto is pretty good, right, there’s lots of musicians and lots of rock clubs to play at. It’s certainly a place where you can meet musicians and put together a band and play clubs and stuff. It’s good. Montreal is close by that city has a good music too, it’s more of a party town than Toronto, though not as big. There’s lots of young people living there because there are various school there, which explains the party town vibe. There’s a lot of good music that’s coming from these two cities. I think it’s an exciting time for music.

What are your current plans to promote the album?

Well touring is priority 1,2,3,4 and 5. We need to get out and play live, it’s what we’re all about, it’s obviously essential to get out there and play to generate interest in the band and sell albums. We’re ready we are a total road band ideally we’d like to spend the next 12 months on the road you know. We’ll take whatever we can get, the only thing that we have scheduled right now for sure is Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey, we’re play in early May. I think it’s on Sunday May 4th that should be great. We’ll get some exposure New Jersey is great for rock ‘n’ roll.

Who would you guys like to tour with?

Well, we’re huge fans of DC, Sabbath and stuff, but we can tour with anyone I think. We just wrapped up some touring with Sum 41 which was a really great experience for us. We met some great people and some of them became fans. We’ll try to do our best to play all ages shows, because the truth is most of our fans are high school aged kids. We like playing mid-size venues so we can still get close to the audience, where if you play bigger venues that’s lost. There’s a bunch of younger bands doing all ages theater tours and that’s the kind of tours we wanna be a part of. I like playing to the kids they come out to see a show and they’ll come out to see all the opening bands. These kids will show up to the venue like two hours early and stay till the end. That’s loyalty man and they wanna get their money’s worth. They want the complete experience and I just love that.

How important are music videos these days?

Well we shot one and we’re getting ready to shoot another one. I think they’re important though they don’t get played as much as they used to you know. I think now you can get them on the internet, some one will see them on there. I like the fact that we can get creatively involved in music videos, we can make them fun and they’ll look good even with a low budget. I personally don’t like the ones that look so slick and sterile like they were made by some corporation. Rock is supposed to be fun which is what we try to depict in our music videos. I think they’re important they simply don’t carry the weight that they used to.

Luke thank you very much for the interview I wish you and the band the best with the self titled album Sound And Fury.

Thanks for the support man and we’ll see you on the road man.
