Now that we've passed the halfway mark of this decade, the new school of heavy metal has surpassed many forming genres into a solid new representation of American metal. That is to say what was once metalcore or hardcore has been consumed into an ambiguous mixture of thrash, prog, a little death metal and so on. This multi-source upgrade is highly evident in someone like LAMB OF GOD or CHIMAIRA, who have become patriarchs in the scene. HIMSA is a band that resides somewhere in the general universe I speak, yet presents more of a brooding, stripped down style that pulls from many influences as do their peers. They've been creeping forwards for the past few years, gaining notoriety and inertia. "Hail Horror Hail" is their latest, and no it has absolutely nothing to do with a certain Japanese band.
Ever heard "Hail Horror Hail" by SIGH? Is it coincidence of tribute?
Johnny Pettibone: Never heard it.
Who did the cover art? How does the image's relevance tie into the album?
Stephen Kasner. It’s the fight for survival in any situation and that’s the theme of the record.
Where does the name HIMSA originate?
It is Sanskrit.
When you first were trying to come up with a band name and everyone was throwing in their input, what was the stupidest one you came up with?
NIRVANA and GREEN DAY
How would you describe your sound and style?
Thrash metal with hardcore kid growling.
How did that DANZIG tour go? Any good Glenn stories?
It was the time of my life. He asked me what song to play for encore in Chicago, "Souls on Fire," thank you.
What's a typical show like?
Big pit, stage dives and sing alongs. Bloody lips and black eyes. Horns in the sky raised high.
What are the byproducts of ethos and slogan?
Insincerity and lack of honor or pride in what one says.
What is the message of the band at it's core?
Fight the power - Chuck D.
How do you feel about KING DIAMOND?
Small man, Big mouth. Great voice.
Ever read "The Watchmen?"
Nope
What is the realization of the perfect counter culture state?
Society is based on marketing perfection so it will never happen.
Explain your views on propaganda and the importance of artistic exhibition.
We are out numbered in voice and fist so to show in a way to make one believe from an outside view is vital. Revolution in art is our only tool to slide under their radar. "The hills have eyes," always!
Are you happy with Prosthetic Records?
Yes we love them. Xoxo
