Another quality act in a lengthy procession of bands rearing the dreary head of melancholy, SINAMORE plays a bleak, goth flavored form of hard rock with metal overtones. The non-attentive listener could easily dismiss them as a SENTENCED clone, but Sinamore are far more. There is a heightened sense of composition, a willingness to embrace new ideas and sounds that a variety of bands in this manner have never quite subjected their audience to.
What is the revolution of Sinamorei
TOMMI MUHLI: I guess the main idea behind SINAMORE is just to rock the shit out from our instruments. The musical path we follow is somewhere between KATATONIA´ melancholic and murderous guitar driven rock/metal with a pop-ish twist of the new Finnish gothic wave. I think of SINAMORE as the dark rockin´ bastard of the Finnish gothic scene - murderous, dark beautiful.
Where does the band name come from?
It´s a confession of some sort. I sometimes feel that other people kinda look us with a weird face thinking why we are putting so much energy to this band. Music is our sin towards the other things we lack doing when we´re playing in this band. The name is also a question if you should feel bad about things you love to do.
How does "A New Day" compare to your previous work and where is the future of the band leading musically?
A New Day is kind of a collection of the latest work (Fallen, Misery Carnival) of SINAMORE and the bit older stuff (Crimson Leaf, Sleeping Away). It shows all the different sides of our band and in my opinion is a good album to introduce our band to the audience. The new stuff we´re writing at the moment follows the more dark side of our debut. There´s more power and stronger melodies in the new stuff. We´ll see what it will end up sounding with good production and final arrangements.
There is an obvious similarity of sound between many of your Napalm label mates. Have you toured with any of these bands? Have there been any side-projects emerging from these groups or other groups of the same definite genre?
Yeah, there is some similarities with for example LACRIMAS PROFUNDERES´ and our sound. I think they´re more into this traditional gothic sound as our wiggles somewhere in between the borders of melodic metal and gothic rock. We haven’t been that lucky to play with the bands from our label but hopefully there will be shows with some of them in the near future. The only band that we’re currently playing is SINAMORE; so no side-projects so far…so small fooling around but nothing serious.
Why do you feel the market is far greater for this music overseas than in America generally?
Due to success of bands like HIM the sound of northern Europe is becoming more known in the States as well, I think. For example here in Finland the charts are flooding with metal bands and it’s more mainstream. Metal bands get more attention in the media than they do overseas. There is something weird in the minds of European people that drives them to listen this melancholic and heavy stuff. Maybe it has something to do with the history or whatever; it has to be in the genes. We’re just fucked up and the rest of the World seems follow the wave. Really, it’s hard to figure out the pattern.
Have you made it to America for any shows thus far?
Not yet! Hope we’re able to come there soon. It costs tons of money and we’re just not yet that well known there.
What is the last good book you read?
Dean Koontz' Hideaway. An excellent book that I’ve read couple of times now! I also just got the Anthony Kiedis biography, really enjoyed that one. Wish I had more time to read! I’m too busy nowadays.
What are some other bands you feel should receive some much needed attention and support?
I would recommend to check out BEFORE THE Dawn’s new album THE GHOST. A great Finnish dark, melodic metal album, it just kills!
What was it like working with this producer?
We were quite short with time in the studio and that’s why we all were a bit stressed about everything. Teemu Aalto is a friend of ours and a great guy to work with. He had good, fresh ideas to our songs and it all came out great. He’s also brilliant musician and maybe you’ll hear of him in the future…
What are your stage shows like?
Four silly looking guys dressed in black jumping around the stage playing loud. We just try to have good time on stage and give everyone a good show. The stuff that we play comes straight from our hearts so no fake rock images are shown and no playback tapes are being used. What you see happening is all that’s happening. Just pure rock ´n roll!
